A Few Things Your Trainer Should Tell You but May Have Skipped.

  1. Be on time. It is a waste of money to be late to a session you’ve already invested in. Running late? Text that thing out.
  2. Don’t arrive in the following states: empty stomach, coming off a cold, or on four hours’ sleep. It wastes both of our time when your body isn’t fueled, hydrated and ready to work.  
  3. We know you are eating more than you tell us! <—– I wish I knew how to make that sentence flash like a Las Vegas sign.
  4. If you’re on a budget, recruit a few friends for a small group session. It may cost less per person, depending on the trainer.
  5. It takes more than depositing $ in my PayPal account and showing up for training to get fit. It’s what you do before and after you meet with your trainer, including choices with food, alcohol and additional workouts. Let’s talk about it.
  6. Ask your trainer what she or he does to keep educated in the field. An educated trainer will get better results and provide variety to keep you engaged and motivated in your workouts.
  7. Stop stalling! “Let me get a dry towel real quick.” “Oh, I need to go to the bathroom again.” Make every minute count.
  8. There is a difference between pain and burn. Be honest with your trainer about which you’re feeling. If you push so hard that you injure yourself, we both lose. Safety first.
  9. My training sessions are intense and don’t allow for blow-by-blow conversations. I care, but save it for later. Let’s WORK! I’m not just interested in your money; I want to see RESULTS.
  10. Whatever the text says, can it wait? There are always exceptions, but it’s hard to give 100% AND text. I serve high profile clients in Washington, DC (where busy is GOOD) but come onnnn…
  11. I do not have time to get sick. Cancel your session if you’re carrying more-than-the-norm germs and stomach viruses and Mad Cow Disease and and…. you get my point? 🙂
  12. Gear matters. Invest in a good pair of sneakers. Your feet and joints will thank you, and so will your trainer. Fashion blogger Jeremy Dante just began a workout routine and asked me about cool workout gear. Lookout for that post in a few days and hold me to it.
  13. Personally, I don’t mind my clients whining because I know that I push them hard. Even my athletes cry. Just do the work.

    Byron, please continue to do more blogs. These are very healthy and therapeutic. As I am in the CHI, I have a trainer here keeping my goal on point. Although its great to read things that compliment everything he says. Everyday I’m closer to my goal just gotta keep making those right choices so I can live better.
